FRENCH SCHOOL AROUND 1700, WORKSHOP OF CLAUDE-JOSEPH VERNET MARINE IN THE MOONLIGHT, OIL ON CANVAS, WITHOUT FRAME
Our painting is a replica made by Vernet's (1714-1789) workshop from an original painted by the artist in 1772 for Henry Arundell, 8th Baron Arundell of Wardour (1740-1808). The first version of our composition is now in the National Gallery of Arts, Washington (inv. no. 2018.13.1) with its counterpart depicting a storm (Washington, National Gallery of Arts, inv. no. 2000.22.1).
The quality of the present painting led the artist's specialist Philip Conisbee to believe that our version was an autograph replica of the painter's. He presented it as such at the 1993 sale before considering it to be a replica ('a good copy studio'; P. Conisbee, op. cit., p. 158) made by his studio in order to meet the numerous commissions Vernet had to fulfil in the 1770s.Special notice
