(Edward Hyde, 1st Earl of) The History of theREbellion and Civil Wars in England, Begun in the Year 1641, 3 vol., Oxford, at the Theater, 1702-04 [and] The Life..., Oxford, Clarendon Printing-House, 1759, together 4 vol., first editions, large paper copies, each vol. with half-title (that in vol.1 with text cut and mounted on blank leaf) and engraved portrait of the author and title-vignette, vol.1 with "Counsellour" on title but without privilege leaf, extra-illustrated with the insertion of over 350 engravings by Houbraken, Vischer, Hollar, Vertue etc. after Van Dyck, Lely, Kneller and others, mostly portraits of contemporary figures, some views, maps, coins etc., a few mezzotints, most mounted on blank leaves (some with two to a page), others bound in, a few folding or double-page, some light soiling, many trimmed (mostly to edge of image), handsome eighteenth century green straight-grain moroccco elaborately stamped in gilt and blind, covers with central gilt crowned monogram of William Lowther, 1st Earl of Lonsdale, spines gilt in compartments, g.e., pink watered silk endpapers with engraved bookplate of Hugh Cecil Earl of Lonsdale, spines a little browned, rather worn and scuffed, joints split, 2 covers detached or becoming so, folio *** Including mezzotint portraits of Charles I by Boydell and Lords John and Bernard Stuart after Van Dyck, Vertue's 1737 panorama of the River Thames on several sheets, and Sanson's map 'Basse Partie de l'Evesché de Munster' published by P.Mortier and with contemporary partial hand-colouring.
