Edwards was a protegé of William Curtis (1746-1799) and spent many years working as an artist at his Botanical Magazine . In 1815 however, Edwards had a falling-out with William Jackson Hooker, then editor of the Botanical Magazine , which led to Edwards leaving to begin his own rival periodical: The Botanical Register .
