Burton, Royal Engineers, served in the Egypt Campaign and was awarded a medal with two clasps, he was employed on special service, under the admiralty in connection with the murder of Professor Palmer and his party (August 1882-March 1883), he served in South Africa during the Boer War (Major) and was mentioned in despatches on 10 September 1901, Burton was promoted from Colonel to Lieutenant-Colonel in 1905. The Murder of Professor Palmer and his Party Edward Henry Palmer (1840-1882) better known as E.H. Palmer was an English orientalist and explorer. In 1882 the government asked Palmer to go to the east and assist the Egyptian expedition by his influence over the Arabs of the El-Tih desert. His job was to prevent the Arab sheikhs from joining the Egyptian rebels and to stop them from interfering with the Suez Canal. He was was successful in doing so and was soon appointed interpreter-in-chief to the force in Egypt, and again sent into the desert to support Captain William Gill to procure camels and gain the allegiance of the sheikhs but offering them large sums of money. On this journey, he and his companions were led into an ambush and murdered (August 1882). His remains were recovered after the war and Palmer now lies in St Paul's Cathedral.
