THE V-J DAY EDITION OF STARS AND STRIPES, PRINTED ON A CAPTURED NAZI PRESS "WAR ENDS: TRUMAN ANNOUNCES TOTAL SURRENDER". The editor of the Southern Germany edition, Major George H. Godfrey, explains in an accompanying note that he took "a few copies to General Eisenhower which he autographed for me and members of my staff. The Stars and Stripes was printed at that time...at Altdorf, Germany...on the press formerly owned by the notorious Julius Streiker [ sic ], who printed the anti-Jewish paper 'Der Sturmer.'" Godfrey says Ike signed six copies in all. The special "Victory Edition" describes the state of postwar Japan, while the regular edition contains several items of interest about the homefront: "Army Band Sad Over Lost Chief" describes the return of The Glenn Miller Band to the U.S. without their leader, who was killed in an accidental bombing over the English Channel in December 1944. Former GI, now Detroit Tigers slugger Hank Greenberg is "Back 'In The Swing' After 6 Weeks" in the Major Leagues. And another small sports story announces "Rickey Syndicate Controls Dodgers."
