Property from the Workman Collection
Eliot, GeorgeFelix Holt. The Radical. Edinburgh and London: William Blackwood, 1863
3 vols., 8vo. Half-titles, 4pp. publisher's advertisements at end of vol. 3. Original rust cloth, covers decoratively stamped in blind, spines gilt-lettered; endpaper to upper joint of vol. 2 just splitting near foot. Housed in custom brown morocco and cloth-covered clamshell case.
First edition.
"There's good chances and bad chances, and nobody's luck is pulled only by one string."
Sometimes referred to as Eliot's "political book," historically Felix Holt has been difficult to place within the author's canon. Set in the months following the passing of the 1832 Reform Act, Felix Holt asks sometimes uncomfortable questions surrounding the wisdom of putting a nation’s fate in the hands of people who believe their interests lie far from one's own. Stated simply, through this novel Eliot is asking if democracy can be trusted to make the right decisions. And, if the answer is no, what does this reveal about the schism dividing one faction of society from another? In this way, Felix Holt can be viewed as a deeply modern and relevant text, almost certainly ahead of its time.
A fine, bright copy.
