ELLERY WELCOMES PRESIDENT MONROE TO "THE LITTLE TOWN OF NEWPORT" Ellery's retained draft of a respectful invitation tendered to the newly inaugurated President Monroe, who was making a New England trip: "I am informed that your Excellency will probably be at New London at the close of this or the beginning of the next week, and sensible that the Connecticut Collector has not accommodations sufficient for you and your suite, I have directed John Cahoone Capt. of the Cutter Vigilant to proceed for New London tomorrow, and to render his best services to your Excellency, and to convey you and your suite to this town if it should be agreeable to you. Your Excellency may be assured that the little town of Newport will gladly welcome you..."
