Embroidered and Painted Needlework Mourning Picture: In Memory of Jacob Rupp (c. 1806-1819)Wrought by Catherine RuppPennsylvaniaCirca 1820
Worked in green, blue, cream, and brown silk threads on a burlap ground with a stitched poem entitled Death of a Teacher above a scene of home and tree and young woman (likely Catherine Rupp) with watercolor painted paper face and vail at the grave of Jacob Rupp; the whole enveloped in undulating floral and diamond pattern border. A note on the reverse indistinctly inscribed "Betty Ring."DEATH OF A TEACHER/ FAREWELL dear friend along farewell. For we shall meet no more. Till we are rais’d with thee to dwell on Zion's happier shore.. (2) Our friend and brother lo is dead: The cold and lifeless clay.... was made in dust its silent bed. And there it must decay.... (3) But is he dead - no no he lives His happy spirit flies .... To heaven above and there receives the lone expected prize. (4) Farewell dear friend. again in farewell soon we shall rise to thee And when we meet in no tongue can tell how great our Joys will be.... / Sweet is the opening flower/ which just begins to bloom/ which everyday and every hour/ Fresh beauties do assume / Catherine C Rupp. The grave lower right with stitched lettering Sacred to the memory of Jacob Rupp departed this life in the 13th year of his age. 1819.
