EMMET GOWIN Concerning America and Alfred Stieglitz and Myself . Richmond, Virginia: by the photographer, 1965. Folio (296 x 270mm). 14 black and white gelatin silver prints (all but one c.175 x c.117 mm or the reverse; the other 121 x 80 mm), mounted rectos only on card with printed captions. Bound as issued in the original illustrated card portfolio (lightly yellowed, light wear at the extremities). Provenance : Emmet Gowin (presentation inscription to:) -- Dr. Emmet W.S. Gowin and Mrs Lynden Grace Parker Gowin -- by descent to the consignor. FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY INSCRIBED BY GOWIN TO HIS PARENTS: 'For my dear mother and father -- pax vobiscum [ie. Peace be with you]. May 1965. Emmet Gowin'. Gowin published Concerning America himself, while still a student, in an edition of just 100 copies. It comprises 14 vintage gelatin silver prints -- early images made between 1963 and '64 which have rarely been anthologized since. Gowin later wrote of these: 'from the beginning I wanted to make pictures so potent I would not need to say anything about them' ( Emmet Gowin , New York: 1976). 'This youthful homage is probably at least as much about America and the seductive power of photography as it is about Stieglitz'; 'Gowin was already ambitious enough to make his book's cover another homage, this one to the original French edition of Frank's The Americans ' ( 101 Books ). 101 Books , pp.172-73.
