Ce dessin représente le premier des douze travaux héroïques de Samson (Juges 14,5). Samson rencontre dans les champs un jeune lion rugissant et le tue en lui brisant la mâchoire. Rubens a traité le sujet à plusieurs reprises dans sa carrière. Une première fois dans un tableau représentant une Chasse au tigre, réalisée vers 1616-1617 pour le roi Maximilien I de Bavière et aujourd'hui au Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rennes. En bas à gauche de cette grande toile, on observe Samson brisant la gueule du lion. Vers 1628, Rubens peint un tableau de ce sujet pour le roi d'Espagne, puis, en 1631, réalise un dessin pour une médaille frappée par Adriaen Waterloos (la composition fut également gravée par F. van den Wijngarde). Enfin, en 1634, Rubens traite à nouveau le sujet dans un dessin préparatoire à un frontispice pour un livre de Maffeo Barberini intitulé Poemata.
Le dessin de la collection Delon, à la provenance prestigieuse, ne peut être rattaché à aucun de ses projets et sa composition ne correspond à aucune qui ait été peinte ou gravée par ou d'après Rubens. Sur aucune de celles-ci, Samson n'a son genou appuyé sur le dos du lion, comme il est représenté sur la présente feuille. Un dessin de Rubens au Rijksmuseum d'Amsterdam (d'Hulst et Vandenven, op. cit., no 28), généralement daté vers 1620, montre la même iconographie (bien que ce soit le genou droit qui soit appuyé sur le dos de la bête et non le gauche comme sur la feuille Delon) mais la position du corps de Samson y est très différente.
Publié en 1937 comme Rubens dans le catalogue de la collection Mond par Borenius et Wittkower, ce dessin est ensuite rejeté de l'œuvre de l'artiste par d'Hulst et Vandenven dans le volume consacré à l'Ancien Testament du Corpus Rubenianum, publié en 1989. Ces auteurs y voient une copie d'après un original perdu de Rubens.
This drawing represents the first of Samson's twelve heroic labours (Judges 14:5), in which he encounters a roaring young lion in the field and kills it by breaking its jaw. Rubens treated the subject several times in his career: firstly in The Tiger Hunt, painted around 1616-1617, for King Maximilian I of Bavaria and now in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Rennes. In the lower left-hand corner of this large canvas, Samson is seen breaking the lion's jaw. In circa 1628 Rubens painted the same subject for the King of Spain, and in 1631 he designed for a medal made by Adriaen Waterloos (the composition was also engraved by F. van den Wijngarde). Finally, in 1634, Rubens treated the subject again in a preparatory drawing for a frontispiece for a book by Mafeo Barberini entitled Poemata.
The present drawing, with its prestigious provenance, depicts Samson with his knee resting on the back of the lion and does therefore not relate to any known works painted or engraved by Rubens. A drawing by Rubens in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam (d'Hulst and Vandenven, op. cit., no. 28), generally said to date to c. 1620, shows the same iconography (although it is the right knee that is resting on the back of the beast and not the left as on the Delon sheet) but the position of Samson's body is very different.
Published in 1937 as by Rubens in the catalogue of the Mond collection by Borenius and Wittkower, this drawing was later rejected as a Rubens drawing by d'Hulst and Vandenven in the Old Testament volume of the Corpus Rubenianum, published in 1989.
