The Chorus had gained popularity after performing in an all-Black “Swing Mikado”, a Gilbert and Sullivan spin-off, at the Golden Gate Expo on San Francisco's Treasure Island in 1939, Pope, Marguerite. A Brief Biography [obituary] of Robert Nathaniel Dett [Hampton Institute Press], Virginia, ca. 1943. 6 pp, original wrappers. A rare imprint. With a signed photograph of the author, a music student at the Black Virginia college. 1944, and an undated program for a concert by the Hampton Institute Choir, conducted by Dett, aboard a ship sailing to Europe around 1931. Dett was one of the most successful African-American composers of the mid-20th century, noted “for his use of folk songs and spirituals for choral and piano compositions in the romantic style.” As a pianist and choir director, he performed at Carnegie Hall and at the Boston Symphony Hall.
