EVANS, Herbert McLean (1882-1971). Collection of ca. 367 scientific publications by Evans. V.p., v.d. (1908-1942). [ With :] Photostatic copies of five journal articles citing Evans' work. V.p., v.d. (1908-1923). Together nearly 400 items bound in 14 volumes, 4 o and 2 o. Each volume with typed table of contents, offprints and some monographs with original wrappers bound in, a few publications present in photostat, publications in journals and collective volumes represented by typescripts or typed references. Tan buckram. Provenance : Herbert M. Evans (author's personal collection, arranged in chronological order with stamped sequential numbering, and typed additions as above ). Evans, a student of Harvey Cushing, was inspired by Cushing and Osler to become a collector of scientific and medical books. He built numerous collections in these areas, "none of which ever had an appropriate bibliographical catalogue" (Norman, p. lxiv). It is reported that he formed and dispersed 7 different history of science collections, and his 1934 catalogue of an Exhibition of first editions of epochal achievements in the history of science (see lot ____) was the first published attempt to list the greatest books in the history of science (J.I. Zeitlin, in Isis , vol. 62, 1971, pp. 507-511). Evans profoundly influenced Haskell F. Norman's collecting activity, and it was through him that Norman linked himself to Osler and Cushing (Norman, pp. xxviii-xxx). The Norman collection contained some 40 books which had belonged to Evans, including several inscribed by Evans to Norman (see lots ______). Professionally Evans was a distinguished biologist, renowned especially for discoveries that included Vitamin E and the growth hormone of the anterior pituitary gland. He did much to establish endocrinology as a discipline in its own right, and he did pioneering work in reproductive physiology and nutrition. The present collection is Evans' own record of his publications from the beginning of his career in 1904 until 1942. It includes many more items for these years than are named in the list of his "Selected Publications" printed in the Journal of Reproduction and Fertility , June 1969, pp. 2-39, although that list continues through 1959. The present collection is an essential source for any comprehensive study of Evans' scientific contributions and for the preparation of a full bibliography of his works. Norman 741.
