.30 Carbine, 18" barrel, S/N XB5. Parkerized finish, blued bolt, oval-cut high-wood stock. Top of receiver marked INLAND DIV. over the serial number. Chamber marked U.S. CARBINE / CAL. 30 M1 in two lines. Stock marked IO in sling cut, with no visible cartouches or inspection marks as would be correct for an "XB" prefix serial number. Two-rivet hand guard marked IO on interior. Barrel marked in three lines: INLAND MFG. DIV. / GENERAL MOTORS / 8-43. Flat bolt top, unmarked marked Type I rear sight, N marked front sight, unmarked Type I barrel band with UI marked swivel, unmarked trigger housing, HI marked hammer. Receiver marked SG below the wood line on the forward left side. Throat erosion 1, muzzle erosion 2. Includes a single IS marked 15-round Type II magazine, a Type I WWII Khaki sling and an oiler. The serial numbers XB1 through XB100 were part of a group of "experiential" for engineering use and presentation M1 carbines produced by Inland that were not delivered to the government or issued for military use. Roughly 800 of these Inland M1 carbines were produced with a variety of X prefix serial numbers, in groups from "X" through "XG", with most produced in a run of 100 guns for each prefix. Provenance:From the Collection of Charlie Hinton Condition: Fine. Retains most of the Parkerized finish with some minor thinning and wear. All markings remain clear and crisp. Mechanically functional, fine bore is mostly bright with some frosting and crisp rifling. Fine stock with some feathery texture remaining and showing only the most minor handling marks. A nice example for the advanced M1 carbine collector.
