FABRE, Franois (1797-1854). Nmsis mdicale illustre, recueil de satires . Paris: Bureau de la Nmsis Mdicale, 1840. 4 o (234 x 154 mm). Numerous wood-engraved text illustrations by Honor Daumier (occasional minor foxing). Original yellow printed boards (some soiling and discoloration). FIRST EDITION. A collection of 25 satirical verses, caricaturing the medical world, its characters (midwives, professors, quacks), fashionable fads (animal magnetism, homeopathy, phrenology), and every other aspect. This was only the only book on medicine illustrated by Daumier, though he prepared many individual lithographs on the theme, and these illustrations are considered his masterpiece in the medium of wood-engraving. The author of the text, Fabre, was actually a doctor and the author of a number of serious medical works. RARE IN ORIGINAL PRINTED BOARDS. Cushing F3 (1841 edition); Heirs of Hippocrates 1575; Osler 4803; Waller 2876; Wellcome III, p. 2 (Vol. I only); Norman 747.
