FADEN, William (1750-1836). A Catalogue of Maps, Charts, and Plans. Printed for William Faden Successor to the late T. Jefferys, Geographer to the King . [London: for William Faden], 1778. 8 o (185 x 120 mm). [4], 19 pages. (Two pale stains on title.) Contemporary blue wrappers (some small losses along spine, some foxing on front wrapper). FIRST EDITION OF A VERY RARE CATALOGUE OF WORKS PUBLISHED AND FOR SALE BY WILLIAM FADEN The catalogue opens with a listing of four "New Works in Hand," including Sauthier's plan of New York, and is followed by a nineteen-page catalogue arranged listing, in order, maps of the World (4), Europe (102), Asia (3), Africa (1), America (15), Military Plans (20), West Indies (31) and Books (15). Faden succeded to the business started by Thomas Jefferys in 1771 and became the most prominent English mapmaker and publisher at the time of the American revolution. Named Geographer to His Majesty and the Prince of Wales, Faden's fame rests primarily on the detailed maps published for the English audience which presented the first news of the battles of the colonies. VERY RARE: no copies have been traced on the market in at least 100 years. Not in JCB, Sabin, Schwartz and Ehrenberg, etc.
