4to (247 x 191 mm). Large engraved map on two folding sheets; light offsetting, a few short fold separations, early bookseller descriptions laid down on verso of title and recto of advertisement leaf, occasional light spotting to text. Modern half red morocco over patterned cloth, "JCB" stamped in gilt on the upper cover with gilt fillet borders; spine gilt, marbled endpapers.
First edition, the John Carter Brown copy. Falkner (1707-1784), Jesuit missionary, spent the years from 1730 in South America, entering the Jesuit Order at Buenos Aires, and from 1740 to 1768 in Patagonia, returning to England after the expulsion of the Jesuits from South America in 1768. "The book is, to this day, the only authentic account we have of the Indians of the Pampas .... It is to Falkner that the world is indebted for some of the stories about the great stature of the natives of Patagonia" (Sabin).
