FANNING, Edmund (1769-1841). Voyages to the South Seas, Indian and Pacific Oceans . New York: William H. Vermilye, 1838. 8 o (187 x 117 mm). Lithographed frontispiece by N. Currier. (Some minor scattered foxing.) Original blue publisher's cloth, spine gilt-lettered (minor wear); cloth slipcase. FIRST EDITION with title untouched. The present edition, calling itself the "second edition" on the title, follows Voyages Round the World; with selected Sketches of Voyages to the South Seas, North and South Pacific Oceans, China, etc. (1833). Both works give accounts of the first naval exploring expedition sponsored by the United States government, commanded by the author. In the present work, Fanning gives an account of the destruction of the Astor's ship Tonquin at Nootka Sound. Howes F28; Sabin 23781.
