A GIFT TO HIS LOVE: FAULKNER INSCRIBES A PHOTOGRAPH TO HIS MISTRESS, META CARPENTER A rare signed and inscribed photograph which recalls Faulkner's whirlwind love affair with Meta Carpenter. Faulkner had married his childhood sweetheart, Estelle Oldham, after her divorce from Cornell Franklin in 1929, shortly after he finished The Sound and the Fury . His writing schedule and frequent travels to Hollywood to work on screenplays kept him inordinately busy during the years of their marriage. He worked closely with director Howard Hawks, and, on a visit to the studios of 20th Century-Fox in December 1935, met Hawk's secretary, Meta Carpenter. Meta was quite beautiful and Faulkner's attraction to the young woman culminated in an affair which abruptly ended upon the her marriage to Wolfgang Rebner in April, 1937. Faulkner's April gift of this inscribed photograph may have been meant as a final memento to be taken by Meta to her new married life and home in Germany. Whether Meta accepted such a gift from her lover on the verge of marriage to another or whether she rejected Faulkner's final offering remains unclear.
