Provenance : Victoria Fielden, Faulkner's step-daughter (presentation inscription). FIRST EDITION. A FINE FAMILY ASSOCIATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY FAULKNER TO HIS STEPDAUGHTER on the title: "Sister from Poppy William Faulkner Rowan Oak 14 May 1952." Victoria Fielden was one of the two children Faulkner raised after his marriage to Estelle Oldham Cornell. Although he never formally adopted Victoria (whom he called "Cho-Cho") or her brother Malcolm, he was very close to her and her husband William Fielden. On her eighth birthday, Faulkner presented Victoria with a hand-bound typescript, The Wishing Tree , a fairy tale of children shrinking and then returning to size. Two years later her mother married Faulkner, who'd inscribed his present "Bill he made this book" (Karl, William Faulkner , 1989, p.285-86). This is the only one of Faulkner's novels adapted for the stage, appropriately perhaps since it is composed entirely of dialogue. Massey 220; Peterson A321b.1.
