When the first Toyota Supra came along in 1979, it was merely a sub-model of the popular Celica coupe. In 1982, the Supra grew up, officially becoming a separate model. Supra Mark III debuted in midyear 1986, but it was the fourth and final version of the Supra that really made people take notice. Debuting in the middle of the 1993 model year, Supra Mark IV looked unlike any previous iteration. Gone were the hidden headlights and wedge-shaped body that had been around since Supra Mark II, now superseded by a more organic and functional form. Toyota's catalog boasted, "In an emphatic breach of established convention, a racetrack-inspired sports car has been taught street manners." Available in normally aspirated and twin-turbo models, the Supra brought its game to a world of 300ZXs and RX-7s, and promptly asserted its character. With a three-liter V-6 with 320 horsepower when equipped with a sequential turbo system, zero to sixty came at a blistering (for the time) 4.6 seconds. Aluminum and other lightweight materials were used generously. The Supra lasted through 1998, then Toyota unceremoniously dumped the Supra for the US market, although it soldiered on in Japan through 2002. But with modifying late-model "tuner" cars spreading in popularity, the lamented rear wheel-drive Supra achieved new life. With the Supra's race-bred chassis and brake system, it also was a favorite in One Lap of America racing. So it should be of no surprise that a Supra would be chosen as one of the featured vehicles in the first three Fast & Furious movies.
