Ein schöne kurtzweilige Historia Niclaus Federmanns des Jüngern von Ulm erster raise so er von Hispania und Andolosia auss in Indias des Occeanischen Mörs gechan hat, und was ihm allda ist begegnet biss auff sein widerkunfft inn Hispaniam, auffs kurtzest beschriben, gantz lustig zu lesen. Full crimson morocco gilt by the Officina Bodoni; morocco-tipped slipcase. Provenance : Josiah Kirby Lilly (library release-stamp on endpaper, duplicate sale Parke-Bernet, 8 November 1962, lot 47); Arne Pettersen (sale, Parke-Bernet, 10 November 1964); bought through L. C. Harper at Swann Galleries (auction sale 1064, 19 May 1977, lot 96). FIRST EDITION OF THIS IMPORTANT ACCOUNT OF AN EXPEDITION INTO VENEZUELA in 1529-1532. The original account of Federmann's first expedition into territories, now mostly Venezuela, granted by Charles V for exploration to the Augsburg banker family Welser, written in Spanish, and translated into German by Federmann himself and published here for the first time, with additions by his brother-in-law Hans Kiffhaber, who signs the dedication. Federmann brought settlers and miners from Seville to Venezuela, then against his instructions explored the Orinoco river searching for the Pacific Ocean. For this he was banished to Europe, returning the the New World for a second expedition in 1536. Until the end of this life Federmann and the Welsers accused each other of financial irregularties in lawsuits brought before the Council of the Indies in Valladolid.
