Fascinating series of documents relating to the proposed introduction into Cuba by American entrepreneur Samuel Eugene Hartwell of an improved technology for the manufacture of cigars, including a detailed description of the device, application for licenses, legal wranglings involving his lawyer Simon Fraser, attempts by Fraser to sell the Royal Charter granted to Hartwell (with or without his permission is unclear), the attempted sale of the two machines, lawsuits for payment of rent for storing the machines, the sale of the machines at auction (for a mere 200 pesos), etc. etc. A curious chapter in the manufacture the world famous cigars of Cuba. Two of the documents are signed by Leopoldo O'Donnell and three by El Conde de Villanueva. Both of this men are significant historical figures in Cuban history.
