Figure en porcelaine représentant un berger, Meissen, daté 1920, E.A 10/11 A Meissen figure of a shepherd (Hirte), dated 1920Urstück [Artist's Proof] No. 10 of 11 Modelled by Paul Scheurich as a nude man wearing a hat and leaning on a tree stump, a staff in his hands, delicately decorated by the artist, on a square base, signed 'Scheurich 1920' to the rear and incised 'Scheurich 19' to the side, 35.6 cm high, crossed swords mark in underglaze-blue, incised model number F 276, impressed 'Bossierer' numeral 48, painter's numeral 12 in black enamel and impressed and incised 'von 11 Ur=/stücken Nr. 10' (staff professionally restuck)FootnotesProvenance: Wolfgang Müller von Baczko 1894-1947), Director of the Meissen Manufactory 1936-40 Literature: Rafael 1995a, ill. 15.2 Exhibited: Meissen, Schauhalle der Staatlichen Porzellan-Manufaktur Meissen, Paul Scheurich 1883-1945 Porzellane für die Meissener Manufaktur, 21 September 1995-10 January 1996; Meissen, Museum der Meissen Porzellan-Stiftung, Paul Scheurich Porzellangestalter Zeichner Grafiker, 6 March 2020-21 February 2021 Modelled by Scheurich in 1918 or, at the latest, 1919, when he exhibited the model at the Spring exhibition of the Akademie der Künste in Berlin. The Meissen manufactory purchased the model for RM 1,500 on 27 August 1919; in November Max Adolf Pfeiffer wrote to Prof. Ernst Zimmermann, Director of the Dresden Porcelain Collection: "...Anliegend send ich Ihnen die Photos unseres neuesten Scheurichs...Ist der "Hirt" nicht ganz entzückend?..." [enclosed I send you the photos of our latest Scheurich...Isn't the 'Shepherd' completely charming?] (Rafael 1995, p. 52). The first porcelain figure was produced around the beginning of 1920 and the first example was sold in October; by 1933, around 160 figures had been sold, thereafter around two each year.
