Lot includes 23 patriotic covers, 5 Civil War and post-Civil War letters, and a copy of The George Walcott Collection of Used Civil War Patriotic Covers. The covers are generally in very good unused condition, and highlights include The Great Naval Battle Between Ericsson's Monitor and the Merrimac, March 9th, 1862, Our gunboats Attacking the Rebel Forts, a caricature of General Scott as a bulldog, taunting Jeff Davis to take Washington, and another Jeff Davis taunt featuring a Jolly Roger flag labeled J.D. His Marque. The five letters, all in their original envelopes, four of which are patriotic, are written by an Ohio volunteer named Isaac Newton, and addressed to his father, Asa, in Camden, Preble County, Ohio. There were several Isaac Newtons serving Ohio and it is not clear from the letters exactly which outfit he served with, but the letters describe his mustering-in at Dayton in August of 1862, including a list of all clothing and supplies issued to him, some skirmishing around Louisville, Ky., and the story of having to carry a Union soldier to the hospital at Louisville after an angry Confederate woman shot him in the hip on the street. and a copy of The George Walcott Collection of Used Civil War Patriotic Covers.
