A critical dissertation on the poems of Ossian, the son of Fingal. [4], 75, [1] pp. 1763. [bound with] Macpherson, James. Temora, an ancient epic poem, in eight books: together with several other poems, composed by Ossian, the son of Fingal. Translated from the Galic language... [4], xxxiv, [2], 247 pp. 1763.Together, 3 volumes bound in one. Each with separate dated title-page, those for Fingal and Temora printed in red and black, with engravings by Isaac Taylor (4to) 25.7x20 cm (10¼x8"), period mottled calf, spine ruled in gilt, raised bands, morocco lettering piece. First Editions The Ossian cycle of epic poems, supposedly translated from ancient Gaelic but actually written by James Macpherson (1736-1796), Scottish writer, poet, literary collector and politician, considered the first Scottish poet to gain an international reputation. In this copy, the preliminary advertising leaf in the first work is bound after p. xvi rather than after the title-page, as sometimes occurs, and the final advertising leaf is not present. Lot Amendments Condition: Some rubbing to joints and extremities, but generally very good plus, a handsome copy. Item number: 285316
