Though never completed, this volume contains, in Part I, col. 1-344, the only complete record of the incomparable collection of Firmin-Didot's early German, Netherlandish, Swiss, English, Italian, Spanish and French woodcut books, listed under the various printing places of each country, and, where necessary, under special printers and artists, often profusely annotated, in all 890 entries, plus many a, b, and c numbers; of these Nos. 764-890 describe "Heures Gothiques," following the arrangement of Brunet's Manuel at the end of Vol. V for the Paris-printed Hours; the fête books ("Solemnités") are described under Nos. 891-965. The last section, "Romans de Chevalerie," Nos. 966-992, ends in mid-sentence on col. 384. A continuation of that section, col. 385-520, Nos. 993-1,020 was printed, but also ends abruptly on col. 520. However, it is the first section on which rests the importance of the volume: not even half of the woodcut books described in it were offered in the six-volume sale catalogue of the Firmin-Didot-Library, 1878-1884 though it contained a roughly equal number of "Heures Gothiques."
