These Eisenhower era congressional edition reports from the new NASA, in plain government document wrappers – unlike the decorative covers used in later Reports during the Kennedy Administration – were the most mundane of the 22 issues that would follow before the Lunar Landing. They included many pages of legal text (including the first NASA agreements with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory at CalTech and the Army Missile Command), patents, and long lists of academic advisors. There is only a sketchy summary of the Mercury Project; Dyno-saur, the first space shuttle concept; the first rocket launch vehicles, Space Probes and Satellites. The second Report includes grainy photos of the chimpanzee launched into space, the Explorer Satellite, America’s belated answer to Sputnik; and the X-15 experimental aircraft, with a brief account of the first communications satellite and a technical description of spacecraft aerodynamics.
