first edition, engraved pictorial title incorporating a map of China, 2 double-page maps of China, portrait of Kircher and 22 (of 23) plates (including a portrait of the Holy Roman Emperor Leopold), 1 folding, 1 plate ?from another copy and loosely inserted, this torn within image (no loss) and creased at edges, some browning and spotting, title with small area of worming to lower left corner and 3 small ink stain towards foot, 'Fabulosa Brachmanum' with tear to lower margin, contemporary vellum, spine worn at raised bands, corners worn, marked [Cordier, Sinica, 26; Caillet 5773], folio, Amsterdam, J.Jansson van Waesberge & E.Weyerstraet, 1667. *** Based on many years correspondence with the Jesuits working in China. It includes the first Sanskrit grammar published in the West and the first appearance in a European book of the Devanagri script.
