Reasons why the British colonies, in America, should not be charged with internal taxes, by authority of Parliament .
New Haven: B. Mecom, 1764. Octavo (8 x 5 inches, 200x125 mm). Later morocco. Condition: Lacks the front free endpaper, lacks text leaf A4, minor repaired tears to the title and terminal leaf; very minor rubbing. Provenance : John Carter Brown (armorial bookplate on the front pastedown, with an inked Duplicate Released stamp). first edition of an important colonial response to taxation. Fitch, the Governor of Connecticut, chaired the committee which authored this pamphlet in the year of the Sugar Act and in response to the proposed Stamp Act. Although here he states emphatically his opposition to these measures, Fitch would eventually protect the stamp collectors once the Act was put in force, causing much consternation among the colonists. “[A] clear & concise statement of the constitutional, historical, & economic arguments of the colony against the proposed stamp tax” ( Dictionary of American Biography ). Scare, with no complete copies listed in American Book Prices Current. Adams, American Independence 3; Evans 9658; Howes F158; Sabin 24588.
