Beschreibung:

FITZGERALD, F. SCOTT. 1896-1940.Tender is the Night. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1934. 8vo. Publisher's blue-green cloth, spine lettered in gilt, upper cover stamped in blind, original pictorial dust jacket, a few small closed tears reinforced with tape to the verso, spine lightly faded. FIRST EDITION OF FITZGERALD'S FINAL BOOK, AND HIS SELF-PROFESSED FAVORITE, INSCRIBED TO H.A. SWENSEID: "from another Minnesotan, F. Scott Fitzgerald / With Best Wishes / Hollywood / 1937." In the second issue jacket with blurbs to the front flap by Mary Colum, Gilbert Seldes, and Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. H.A. Swenseid was a bookseller from Minnesota who became a buyer for the Pickwick Book Shop on Hollywood Boulevard. Perhaps Fitzgerald's most poignant and powerful work, Tender Is the Night is considered by many to be Fitzgerald's true masterpiece. Fitzgerald was disappointed with its sales, and even critics were largely indifferent, perhaps its emotional and tragic look at the idle rich did not square well with the new realities of 1930s America and the depression. But as Hemingway wrote to Max Perkins in 1935, "A strange thing is that in retrospect his Tender Is the Night gets better and better." With the resuscitation of Fitzgerald beginning in the 50s, this work has over time assumed it's place as a modern masterpiece. Connolly Modern Movement 79; Bruccoli A14.1.a.
