FITZROY ROBERT (1805-1865) English Royal Navy Officer and scientist, famed as the captain of HMS Beagle during Charles Darwin's famous voyage. D.S., Robert FitzRoy one page (vellum), oblong folio, Auckland, New Zealand, 30th December 1844. The partially printed document being a Deed of Grant issued to James Bruce authorising the sale of land, stating in part, '…one of our Commissioners appointed to hear, examine, and report upon claims to land obtained by purchase from the Aboriginal Inhabitants of the Colony of New Zealand has reported that James Bruce of Akoroa is entitled to receive a grant of (2) two acres of land…' The document further describes the location of the granted land. Signed by FitzRoy at the foot of the document in his capacity as Governor and Commander-in-Chief of New Zealand. With the remnants of a red wax seal to the lower left corner. With a very small hole to the vertical fold, mild foxing and light age wear. G
