FIVE CHINESE LACQUERED AND PAINTED WOOD FIGURES Ming Dynasty and later 明或後期 木雕加彩人物像五件 Comprising a partial figure of an official dressed in gilt-lacquered and moulded robes, a large horseshoe-back chair raised on a plinth, together with a smaller figure of a court official dressed in bright gilt-lacquered robes and seated atop a separate horseshoe-back throne, a standing figure of a warrior with his hands held up in prayer, and two large figures of deities, 19 - 34cm high (7) - PROVENANCE: From the collection of Augustus Fletcher (1928-2020), thence by descent. From 1948 to 1958 Gus Fletcher served in the Colonial Police in Malaya, and latterly was Assistant Superintendent of Police and Area Special Branch Officer in the Kuala Pilau and Bahau Police Districts of Negri Sembilan. He was awarded the George Medal in 1957 after a combined police and military operation code-named “Googly” during the Malayan Emergency.
