[Flemish school] Studies of female saints and other figures. 1st half 18th c Pen and brown ink, brown and gray wash, graphite, 30,4 x 39,5 cm, laid paper, unsigned (sm. tear in upper edge, black and brown stains). The recto is dominated by 2 figures executed in pen and brown wash: a religious figure in a habit entranced in devotion and a triumphant Virgin Mary, crushing the dragon under het feet. The latter is typical for Marian imagery during the Counter-Reformation in Antwerp. Other smaller figure sketches of men and soldiers are added around these two women. The verso shows a seated nun in prayer. At left a group of 5 figures executed in pen, most likely by a different hand. Possibly drawings from a sculptor's workshop.
