Etched allegorical title, engraved divisional title to Fiori del Calvario. Sonetti , woodcut and typographical ornaments. Modern vellum. Provenance : C.A. Chiesa (sold to Gourary 1963). FIRST EDITION of Salvadori's libretto and Parigi's sets for an important Christian opera, which had been commissioned by the Medici regents, Christina of Lorraine and Maria Magdalena of Austria, for the state visit of the latter's father, ARCHDUKE KARL. Its publication, however, marked the opera's revival a year later. The subject was the martyrdom of Saint Ursula, the music was composed by MARCO DA GAGLIANO, the battle scenes were staged by AGNIOLO RICCI who was also the choreographer for the ballets. EXTREMELY RARE: not in Cicognara, Ruggieri, Vinet, etc. O. Sonneck, Catalogue of Opera Libretti before 1800 (Washington 1914) p. 925; A.M. Nagler, Theatre Festivals of the Medici ch. 13.
