Half-title, full-page engraved plate incorporating the Medici arms by Hubert Vincent engraved portrait of the dedicatee, Cosimo III, by Theodor Vercruys, and 37 engravings of naval subjects by Vincent, woodcut historiated and ornamental initials, head- and tailpieces, typographical ornament headpieces. (Very occasional very light spotting, neat tear in one plate to just within plate mark.) Contemporary vellum (very slightly worn at extremities, old bookseller's label partly removed from rear pastedown). The knightly order of St. Stephen was founded by Cosimo de' Medici, first Grand Duke of Tuscany; one of its chief aims was the defence of the coast against pirates, which it accomplished with some renown. Fontana's history of the order begins with descriptions of Pisa and Livorno, gives biographical notes on the six grand dukes of Tuscany, and details naval engagements under the admirals of St. Stephen, mostly against the Turks. The fine plates illustrate battles along the coast at Algiers, Negroponte, Bona, Sisto, Namur and elsewhere. Graesse II, 611.
