Formerly featured in the 1992 Nieman Marcus Christmas Catalogue 1946 HARLEY-DAVIDSON FL WITH SIDECAR Frame No. 46FL1174 Black frame, tank and sidecar with black leather seat Engine: twin cylinder overhead valve, 1,200cc (74ci.); Gearbox: three-speed; Suspension: coil sprung front; Brakes: front wheel expanding band. Left hand drive. The idea was to take the effort out of bicycling. In 1903 Bill Harley and the Davidson brothers were ready to put their concept into production, and in fact they produced a grand total of three motorcycles. All three were bought and paid for before they were completed. With the help of Davidson's cabinet maker father a 10x15 foot factory was erected in the Davidson backyard. They painted 'Harley-Davidson Motor Co.' on the door and the legend was born. As the sport of motorcycling matured and the nation's roads and highways improved, more and more riders took to the open road to take advantage of their love for motorcycling, increased free time and the sense of adventure. To meet the demand for a more responsive and comfortable machine, in 1936 Harley-Davidson introduced the powerful EL. In the early forties, the overhead valve engine grew to 74 ci. and the motorcycle was designated the FL. The FL became known as the 'King o' the Highway' and represented the ultimate in highway cruising comfort. The machine on offer is a beautiful example of the mid-Forties FL Harley, complete with a period sidecar. This Harley-Davidson was restored in 1992 to be sold in that year's Neiman Marcus Christmas catalogue. As we understand it, only a highly limited number of these bikes were offered that year. It was purchased from the catalogue by the current owner. Since then the Harley has covered just 50 miles and the condition of paintwork, chrome, seat and tires remains exemplary. We understand that this motorbike is a proficient machine and operates as expected. Visually and mechanically impressive, this wonderful motorbike offers the added ability of transporting additional passengers in its period sidecar. WITHOUT RESERVE
