Rolls-Royce has enjoyed the patronage of show business celebrities since its earliest days, the glamour of its products making them an almost essential accessory for anyone constantly in the public eye. This Corniche Convertible belonged to the late George Mitchell until his death in August 2002. Best remembered for hosting BBC Television's popular Black & White Minstrel Show, George Mitchell was born in Scotland in February 1917. He formed an Army choir while on active service, graduating to radio broadcasting throughout WW2 and into the 1950s and featuring on a succession of that era's most popular shows including ITMA, Variety Bandbox, The Goon Show, Life with the Lyons and Around the Horn. Following the pilot 1957 Television Minstrels broadcast from the National Radio Show at Earls Court and featuring the George Mitchell Minstrels and Television Toppers dancers, the concept made its BBC TV debut as The Black & White Minstrel Show in 1958. A Royal Command Performance, two Golden Discs and the coveted Golden Rose of Montreux award in 1961 were among the highlights of a 20-year run that saw the show regularly set new UK viewing records. George Mitchell was a car enthusiast throughout his life owning, among other vehicles, a Sunbeam Talbot, Jaguar XK140 and XK150, Facel Vega and Vega II, Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud Convertible, Bentley Continental and, finally, his favourite Rolls-Royce Corniche. He refused to part with this car and used it only for 'high days and holidays'; thus it has fewer than 70,000 miles recorded and possesses a complete service and maintenance history. Regretfully offered for sale by his wife, the car is finished (to special order) in Nottingham Green metallic with ivory hide upholstery and comes with history file, owner's wallet and service book, road fund licence to August 2003, MoT to April 2004 and Swansea V5.
