Lot of 4: Comstock, Cyrus Ballou (1831 - 1910). Enlisted as 2nd Lieut. 7.1.55 commissioned into 1st Battn. Engr. US Army. ADC to Grant and Sherman 3.29.64. Three brevets - two BG, one MG. Promoted to full Colonel 7.25.66. Retired 2.3.95. No backmark. Clark, William Hyde (1836-1872). A resident of the frontier, Clark enlisted in April 1861 at Dubuque, IA as 1st Lieut. in the 1st IA Infy. As with many, this was a three-month unit, and he mustered out in August. He re-enlisted a year later and was commissioned Captain and AAG, serving on the staff of Maj. Gen. Francis Herron, who was assigned primarily to the Western theater, especially in Arkansas and Missouri. Clark received a promotion to Major in 1863, and brevets for Lt. Col., Col., and Brig. General in March 1865. He resigned in September 1865 after peace "broke out." Signed on verso "Truly your friend / Wm. Hyde Clark / US Vols." Backmark of Borah, Lancaster, OH. Cutting, William (1832-1897). Cutting enlisted in November 1861 and was commissioned into the QM Dept. as a Captain. He was promoted the following summer and assigned as ADC. He served on Burnside's staff, resigning a month after Lee's surrender. Cutting received brevets for Lt. Col. (Wilderness and Spotsylvania) and Col. (Knoxville) in August 1864, and Brig. Gen. in March 1865. This cdv in civilian clothes, with backmark from Rome, Italy (and, of course, the photographer's backdrop has the coliseum in the background). Ink identification on verso. Cutts, Richard Dominicus (1817-1883). Cutts enlisted in November 1861 and was commissioned Col. and Add'l. ADC Vols.on General Halleck's staff. He was a resident of Washington, DC, and held an appointment in the Coast and Geodetic Survey. He apparently served there throughout the war. Cdv a postwar copy by Dodge, Chicago. Premium mount with gilt edges. Provenance: The Robert Trownsell Collection Condition: Clark in very good condition, other than many pencil notes, inscription and 2-cent stamp on verso. Comstock also very good. Cutting has clipped corners, upper right corner of albumen coming off the mount. Cutts good other than minor wear of gilt on edges.
