Title: Four Months Among the Gold-Finders in California: Being the Diary of an Expedition from San Francisco to the Gold Districts Author: Brooks, J. Tyrwhitt [pseud. of Henry Vizetelly] Place: New York Publisher: D. Appleton & Company Date: 1849 Description: 94 + [2] ad pp. Woodcut map. (8vo) 23.5x15 cm (9¼x5¾"), original printed wrappers. First American Edition. American edition of this spurious account of mining for gold in California (Howes calls it "one of the most remarkable `imaginary voyages' since Defoe"), apparently written in just ten days by Vizetelly with the assistance of English publisher David Bogue. Based upon various publications and reports, the book was so convincing that it was accepted as fact well into the twentieth century. Warren Heckrotte notes that the crude, untitled woodcut map of the gold region "also appears in the fifth and some later editions of Bryant, What I Saw in California, which was published by Appleton." Provenance: Schoyers, 4/03 References: Cowan p.75; Howes V134; Kurutz 653c; Wheat Maps 64. Lot Amendments Condition: Wrappers worn with some large chips, lower corner of front wrapper missing; internally very good. Item number: 271034
