A Narrative and Impartial Discovery of the Horrid Popish Plot: Carried on for the Burning and Destroying the Cities of London and Westminster... [12], 27 pp. Engraved frontispiece portrait. London: Robert Boulter et al, 1679. Prance, Miles. A True Narrative of the Discovery of several very Remarkable Passages relating to the Horrid Popish Plot... [8], 40 pp. Engraved portrait. London: Dorman Newman, 1679. Everard, Edmund. The Depositions and Examinations of Mr. Edmund Everared (Who was Four Years close Prisoner in the Tower of London) concerning the Horrid Popish Plot... [4], 16 pp. London: Dorman Newman, 1679. Together, 4 works bound together. (folio) 29x19 cm. (11½x7¼"), later half calf & cloth. The Popish Plot was a fictitious conspiracy concocted by Titus Oates that gripped England in anti-Catholic hysteria between 1678 and 1681. Oates alleged that there existed an extensive Catholic conspiracy to assassinate Charles II, accusations that led to the execution of at least 15 men and precipitated the Exclusion Bill Crisis. Eventually Oates' intricate web of accusations fell apart, leading to his arrest and conviction for perjury. Lot Amendments Condition: Wear to spine, front joint cracked; 1st leaf mounted on later flyleaf; damp and mildew staining withing; good, sold as is. Item number: 258011
