FRANCIS de Sales (1567-1622, Saint). A Treatise on the Love of God ... The Eighteenth Edition . Translated from French into English by Miles Pinkney ("Miles Car"). Douai: Gerard Pinchon, 1630. 8 o (165 x 100 mm). Engraved title and engraved portrait of de Sales by Martinus Baes (portrait cropped along fore-margin). (Some occasional pale browning or spotting.) 19th-century English brown morocco, edges gauffered and gilt, by Hayday (light wear along joints and at ends of spine). Provenance : Estelle Doheny (morocco bookplate) -- donated to SMS 12 December 1946. FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. The translator, Miles Pinkney (called Miles Car on the title) was ordained at Douai College and assisted in the founding of an English Convent of the Augustininians at Paris. Engraved frontispiece portrait of Gildas by William Marshall (Without the final blank?). 18th-century red straight-grained morocco gilt. Provenance : some early marginalia -- Estelle Doheny (morocco bookplate; purchased from Maggs Bros., London, 11 November 1943) -- donated to SMS 1943. FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. STC 11895.
