Morellet was inspired by the mathematical principles behind the early geometric abstractions of the Dutch Neo-plastic artists (Mondrian, van Doesburg, Vantongerloo). He used regular grids and repetition in an attempt to reduce the role of the artist’s individual sensibility to a minimum. With this artist’s book, Morellet begins with a series of horizontal lines covering the first page, and then systematically rotates every other line through 90° until the final page has a perfect geometric grid pattern. Published in an edition of 750 copies, numbered and signed in pencil by Morellet on the book’s inner flap.
