Engraved title by Anthoine Serrurier, 50 full-page engraved illustrations of flowers, and 2 full-page engraved illustrations of gardens by Serrurier. Woodcut initials and type-ornaments. (Occasional offsetting, lacking the plate preceding 2A1 called for by Hunt.) Mid-20th-century crushed red morocco janseniste by Devauchelle, spine lettered in gilt, gilt turn-ins, gilt edges (extremities very lightly rubbed). Provenance : occasional plant-names in an early hand -- early inscription on verso of final leaf -- traces of inkstamp erased from foot of title. FIRST EDITION. 'C'est un livre que recommandent la facilité des vers, l'érudition des notes et la belle exécution des planches' (Brunet). Franeau's early botanical work is illustrated with plates of flowers and a repeated view of a garden; the view and some of the floral plates are copies in reverse from Crispijn vande Pas's Hortus floridus , which was first published in 1614 (cf. Blunt and Stearn pp. 111-112). RARE: this is the only copy recorded at auction in over 30 years.
