A Confession of Faith, Put forth by the Elders and Brethren of Many Congregations of Christians … Adopted by the Baptist Association met at Philadelphia, Sept. 25, 1742.
Philadelphia: B. Franklin, 1743. 2 parts in one volume, 112, [2]; 62 pp., 8vo (140 x 90 mm). Section title to the second part. Contemporary sheep, covers tooled in blind, crudely rebacked with leather at an early date. Housed in a cloth chemise and red morocco backed slipcase. Condition : tears to title page crudely repaired, title page stained, other foxing and browning, text block nearly detached, front pastedown renewed. Provenance : John and Elizabeth Watson Stillwell (ink inscription on the front free endpaper). the first baptist confession to be printed in america. Based on the sixth edition first set forth in London in 1643, this Confession was approved by the Baptist Congregations meeting in Philadelphia in September 1742. “At the same Philadelphia meeting in 1742 the Association approved the idea of having a treatise of church discipline written and published. The task assigned to Jenkins Jones and Benjamin Griffith, minister of the Perkasie (Pa.) Baptist Church, eventually fell to Griffith” (Miller). The discipline comprises the second part to this printing of the Confession and appears with its own title. Campbell 264; Evans 5124; Hildeburn 811; Miller 317.
