(Some occasional offsetting and minor spotting.) 19th-century straight-grained maroon morocco gilt, spine gilt, edges gilt (rebacked preserving original spine, very slight wear at extremities). Provenance : Viscount Melville, possibly Robert Saunders Dundas (1771-1851), first lord of the Admiralty from 1812 to 1830 (armorial bookplate); Thomas W. Streeter (bookplate; his sale part VI, Parke Bernet, 23 April 1969, lot 3699). FIRST EDITION of Franklin's account of his second Arctic journey, which proved to be much more comfortable than his first expedition. He and his party surveyed a large portion of the coast of Arctic North America and collected important data on magnetism, geology, topology, and meteorology.
