Gray (inscription from Mrs. Schaeffer on flyleaf); Sam Emlin, Jr. (signature on title page); Burton William Pearl (bookplate). TWO QUAKER, ANTI-SLAVERY PUBLICATIONS, INSPIRED BY THE GREAT ANTHONY BENEZET FIRST EDITION. Miller notes that of the nine items listed on the title-page, "the first, fifth, sixth, and seventh had previously been printed by Benjamin Franklin and David Hall all in Caslon type. The remainder had been printed by Christopher Saur, who owned no Caslon letter." The volume title is also ascribed to the Franklin and Hall press on the evidence of the Caslon type used. "Anthony Benezet, the well known Quaker schoolmaster in Philadelphia, assembled the collection during the spring of 1760 in a lot of 500 copies for distribution to those of a religious disposition 'in ye back parts of Maryland, Virginia and N. Carolina...and Connecticut...'" (Miller, 730). The four Franklin and Hall imprints are William Law's Extract from a Treatise (1760, Miller 731); William Dell's Doctrine of Baptism (1759, Miller 702); Dell's Trial of Spirits (1760, Miller 726); and John Rutty's Liberty of the Spirit (1759, Miller 719). The two Saur imprints are Thomas Hartley's Discourse on Mistakes Concerning Religion (1759, Evans 8364), and Benezet's Observations on the Inslaving, Importing and Purchasing of Negroes (1760, Evans 8542). Benezet (1713-1784) opened his home to black students in the early 1750s, providing free evening classes. By 1760, he was branching out to become a major early activist of the anti-slavery cause, using his pamphlets to denounce slavery on religious and moral grounds. -- LAW, William. An Extract from a Treatise...called The Spirit of Prayer... Philadelphia: B. Franklin and D. Hall, 1760. 8vo (7¼ x 4½in.), modern brown cloth binding (foxed). Provenance : George Keim (three signatures). First published in London in 1750, Miller suggests that this work was commissioned by the Society of Friends. Evans 8633; Miller 731. Together 2 items .
