FRANKLIN, Sir John (1786-1847). Narrative of a Journey to the Shores of the Polar Sea, in the Years 1819-20, 21, and 22 . London: John Murray 1823. [With:] Narrative of a Second Expedition to the Shores of the Polar Sea, in the Years 1825, 1826, and 1827 . London: John Murray 1828. 2 volumes, 4° (266 x 208 mm). Without half titles and errata slip, 10 engraved folding maps, one of these coloured in outline, and 61 engraved plates, 42 of these coloured, after Hood, Curtis, Kendall and Back by E. Finden and Curtis (dampstain in top margin of some gathering of vol. I, plates with some spotting, mostly marginal, and occasional soiling). Contemporary calf, spines ruled in gilt, gilt morocco lettering-pieces, marbled edges (rebacked preserving the original spine, lettering-pieces renewed, scuffed with small areas of surface loss, front hinge of vol. II broken). Provenance : General Sir John Gaspard Le Marchant (1803-1874, bookplate, and inscription recording a gift to Lady Le Marchant from Prince Albert, dated 1863) -- Bain, London (bookseller's ticket) -- 'Sandwell, Vancouver, September 1960' (inscription). FIRST EDITIONS OF FRANKLIN'S OVERLAND VOYAGES. FROM THE LIBRARY OF GENERAL SIR JOHN LE MERCHANT, SUCCESSIVELY LIEUTENANT-GOVERNOR OF NEWFOUNDLAND AND NOVA SCOTIA. The first voyage was made to the mouth of the Coppermine River and is one of the worst journeys on record, with many of the party dying from cold, hunger or murder. 5,500 miles were covered and Franklin's narrative at once became a classic of travel literature. The second voyage traced the North American coast from the Mackenzie River to longitude 1490 37' W. 'The views of Arctic scenery are of extreme beauty' (Hill). Field acknowledges the great ethnographic interest in the work: '"Dr. Richardson's Account of the Cree Indians" is one of the best, and certainly the most authentic statement of their peculiar customs and modes of life'. This copy is from the library of Sir John Le Marchant who, following a successful military career, took up a series of posts in Newfoundland, becoming Lieutenant-Governor in 1847, then becoming Lieutenant-Governor of Nova Scotia in 1852, a position which he held until 1857. Abbey Travel 635; Arctic Bibliography 5194; Field 560, 561; Hill p.111; Lande 1181, 1182; NMM 827, 843; Sabin 25624, 26228; Staton & Tremaine/TPL 1248, 1434. (2)
