8vo (220 x 135 mm). 3 engraved maps partially handcolored; some scattered foxing, mostly confined to first few pages. Publisher’s blind-embossed blue cloth gilt, yellow-coated endpapers; slightly worn ay extremities, a bit soiled.
Second edition, including the searches continued in 1852 and expanded to almost twice the length of the first edition of the previous year (see previous lot); the first edition included seventeen entries, while the present contains forty-six, being "excerpts from magazines, newspapers, official despatches, letters, reports, and narratives of expeditions, concerning the Northwest Passage, the Franklin Search (then in progress), the north polar sea, routes to the Pole, wintering experiences, animals and place names" (Arctic Bibliography 10849). In addition to the two maps issued with the 1851 edition, the second also includes "Polar Chart to illustrate A. Peterman's Papers on the Arctic Regions." Scarce.
