SIGNED AND INSCRIBED by Freeman to "Marlboro and its able Superintendant, J. Berkeley Gordon," dated June 1954. In the introduction, Freeman points out that many of the offprints are of "historical interest," as they refer to the practice of pre-frontal lobotomy, which was supplanted by the safer practice of trans-orbital lobotomy, which Freeman developed. Although a pioneer of psychosurgery, Freeman's work remains clouded by controversy; some 15% of his patients died from the procedure, and recovery for the successful patients was a long process.
