FRÉMONT, John Charles Geographical Memoir upon Upper California, in Illustration of His Map of Oregon and California . 30th Congress, 1st Session. Senate Miscellaneous Document, no. 148. Washington, D.C.: Wendell and Van Benthuysen, 1848. 8 o (228 x 148 mm). Folding map of Oregon and Upper California after Charles Preuss (a few short tears or splits along folds). Text in original green printed wrappers, later cloth backstrip (chipped at edges, lower right corner lacking); map and text each in a separate quarter blue morocco chemise, slipcase. Provenance: Smith College Library (perforated stamp on title, withdrawn ink stamp). FIRST EDITION, Senate issue. This is the account of the third Frémont expedition, sometimes found with Emory's Notes of a Military Reconnoissance . Wagner-Camp notes that most copies lack the map, which is present here. Wheat devotes an extensive analysis to the map, drawn by Charles Preuss, which shows the route of the expedition from Pueblo to White River, down to the Green, through almost new and uncharted territory to Utah Lake, eastern Nevada, and California. The text consists of Frémont's description of the third expedition, undertaken in 1845-46 but unpublished until 1848, with charts of astronomical observations. "The Map and Geographical Memoir ... have a two-fold importance in history, first as contributions to geographical and cartographical knowledge in the year 1848, and second as historic documents concerning Frémont's notable Third Expedition" (Wheat). Cowan I p.223; Graff 1429; Howes F-366; Rittenhouse 227; Sabin 25837; Wheat Gold Rush 78; Wheat Mapping the Transmississippi West 559; Zamarano 80 , 89. (2)
